Since small form factor (SFF) PCs have become quite the trend amongst PC builders, power supply (PSU) manufacturers have been accommodating this trend by releasing more highly-capable power supplies in the SFX/SFX-L PSU format. Virtually all SFF builds and mini-ITX enclosures utilise this smaller SFX power supply format, and hence it is important to do the necessary research to pick the right SFX power supply for your next ITX build in 2020.

Without further ado, here are the best SFX PSUs we recommend for your next mini-ITX build – ranging from budget to enthusiast grade power supplies. Check out these guides instead for PSU recommendations you’re planning to build specifically with the NCase M1, A4-SFX, Node 202 or Ghost S1 mini-ITX enclosures.

Best Value SFX PSU (450W) – Corsair SF450 Gold

Corsair SF450

Low to mid-range (and even some high end) SFF builds will not require wattage north of 400 watts, and hence if you are on a budget then there is no point going for a 600W or greater SFX power supply since it won’t be necessary. Power supplies with 450W wattage are used by most SFF builders for these mid range builds – and still provide a great reserve of power for when the SFFPC is under load.

What is regarded as the best SFX/SFF PSU on the market for most mini ITX builders is the Corsair SF450 Gold. This SFX PSU offers best in class performance with impressive power delivery and efficiency levels, whilst super silent under any load. The Corsair SF450 will be a suitable enough wattage for any single GPU setup – you should only look at going for a 600W PSU or greater if you look at running a dual GPU setup or want complete peace of mind regarding TDP’s.

The difference between the Gold and Platinum rated versions of the SF450 are minimal – with very similar levels of efficiency and the Platinum version includes sleeved cables that the gold version does not. We actually recommend the gold version since it is slightly cheaper and the non-sleeved cables actually are a bit easier to work with and more flexible – very useful when building in a SFF enclosure.

Best 600W SFX PSU – Corsair SF600 Platinum

Corsair-SF600

The winner of our 600W SFX PSU also comes from Corsairs SF range of SFX power supplies – the Corsair SF600 Platinum. Highly recommended by JonnyGuru this power supply took one great power supply (SF600 Gold) and make it even better and more efficient – creating an SFX PSU that has fantastic build quality in a modular design, crazy high-efficiency and voltage stability. Fans can run in semi-fanless mode and have been known to be virtually quiet in pretty much anything you can throw at this power supply. This is the best SFX power supply on the market for mid-to-high end SFF builds in 2019.

The only 600W SFX power supply that will be able to top this is Corsairs unreleased SF600 Titanium version.

Best SFX PSU for Extreme SFF Builds (RTX 2080 Ti, i9-9900K) – Corsair SF750 Platinum

Corsair-SF750-Platinum-Best-SFX-power-supply-1

This power supply will be overkill for 99% of SFF builds, but if you’re looking for the absolute best SFX power supply for SFF builds that may contain power-hungry components such as the RTX 2080 Ti, Threadripper or Core i9-9900K build – then we recommend no other SFX PSU than the Corsair SF750 Platinum.

The Corsair SF750 Platinum has best in class power delivery, efficiency and reliability when it comes to SFX power supplies – Corsair really does dominate the SFX power supply market with its SF series. The SF750 Platinum is ultra silent with 0dB operation up to 300W.

If the SF750 Platinum is too expensive for you, the SF750 Gold rated version offers very similar levels of efficiency under any load, but we personally recommend that the $30 difference between the SF750 Gold and Platinum it is a no-brainer to opt for the Platinum rated version. The SF750 Platinum version includes the braided cables, which aren’t included with the Gold rated SF750.

As we have mentioned before, 750W will be overkill for most builds – and hence if you don’t need this extra wattage, we recommend going for the 600W version of this SFX power supply in the SF range – the Corsair SF600 Platinum that we have covered earlier. Many hardware tests have shown that the max power draw even from the most extreme of builds such as a overclocked i9-9900K with the RTX 2080 Ti – the maximum power draw was south of 530 watts!

Best SFX-L 650W PSU – Seasonic Focus Gold SFX-650

If your SFF enclosure is able to fit an SFX-L power supply, and looking to do a high-end power-hungry build, then you only have a handful of decent PSUs to pick from. The best SFX-L power supply right now in 2020 comes from Seasonic with their Focus Gold SFX-650 that has just been released, and offers a fantastic power delivery, efficient and can run even the most demanding of systems under full load with ease and with quiet operation. The fan on the SFX-650 is super quiet and operates fan-less with most day-to-day use and even gaming.

This is a heavy PSU, it really does feel like a brick – but it is built to last and to perform when you need it to.

If you need a capable SFX-L power supply, the Seasonic Focus Gold SFX-650 is our recommendation.
